Dental Assistant

Position Description

This full-time position includes being responsible for assisting the dentists and hygienists in patient care and aiding in the operational coordination of the dental clinics of Catholic Charities. 

The Dental Care program is called to provide excellent, comprehensive dental care in a kind, compassionate setting to low-income patients in Eastern Oklahoma, to eliminate pain and improve overall health.

Ministerial

Key Responsibilities

  • Timely opening and closing of the clinic in conjunction with the other employees 
  • Assure that Dentrix chart is ready for the dental provider in the operatory and charts as instructed by dental provider 
  • Have treatment trays ready for patient treatment and extraction clinic 
  • Clean and maintain operatories, sinks, and other work areas 
  • Disinfection of treatment areas, sterilization of instruments, monitoring of weekly spore testing and maintenance of a sterilization log, maintenance of sterilization equipment, etc. 
  • Maintain stock in all operatories 
  • Coordination of waste disposal, and coordination of maintenance and repair of dental equipment including the scheduling of service calls 
  • Seats patients and assists dentists, hygienists, and assistants during patient care, as needed both during the day and Tuesday evenings, and gives post-op care instructions  
  • Lab duties as requested by supervising dentist, including pouring models, preparing cases to send to the dental lab, and keeping the clinic lab tidy 
  • In conjunction with other assistants, maintain dental materials inventory by noting low stock and needed items with the lead assistant for order with the dental supply representative 
  • Maintenance and tracking of laboratory invoices and submission for payment 
  • Responsible for keeping track of work hours and scheduling work appropriately 
  • Schedule patients’ return appointments and confirm patients for treatment in the clinic, as needed  
  • Answer the phone and return or relay voice messages, as needed 
  • Perform additional tasks as requested by management 

 

Key Skills

  • Dental background with experience as chair-side assistant  
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities and meet deadlines 
  • Ability to quickly learn and competently utilize Dentrix Ascend, digital radiography technology, intraoral scanning, etc.

License and/or Certifications

  • Active, unrestricted dental assisting license in the State of Oklahoma 
  • Radiology expanded function permit 
  • Coronal polishing expanded function permit a plus, but not required 
  • Current CPR certification required 
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver’s license 
  • Current immunization record 

 

Special Requirements

  • Ability to adapt to changing clinical circumstances including but not limited to traveling to different clinical sites as required in addition to practicing dentistry in a mobile or portable environment if fixed clinical space becomes unavailable at any timeMust be willing to work evening hours and weekends if necessary 

 

Typical Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged sitting or standing may be required. Those physical movements and the degree of mobility normally associated with the practice of primary care dentistry will be performed on a repetitive basis.  
  • Work under stressful conditions as well as irregular hours may be required.  
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation and other conditions common to a clinical environment may routinely be encountered.
