Innovative ESL learning opportunities bridge culture and community

"We are able to help our students achieve their goals, whether it is learning English to help their families or getting their high school equivalency to get a better job." - Beth Nichols

In an era where communication is key to success and integration, Catholic Charities' Adult Education program is bringing innovation to the classroom, especially for those struggling with English as a second language. Run primarily by volunteers, this program, free of charge to its students, does more than just teach English; it immerses its learners in real-life scenarios, making the journey of language learning both practical and engaging.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this program is the setup of mock environments, such as a grocery store, a restaurant, a travel agency, and a banking counter. These settings are not merely backdrops but interactive learning spaces where students can practice everyday English in contexts they are likely to encounter in their daily lives.

In the mock grocery store, students learn the names of various items, how to ask for prices, and how to interact with cashiers. This hands-on approach not only enhances vocabulary but also builds confidence in navigating real-world situations.

Similarly, the mock restaurant serves as a perfect setting for students to practice ordering food, understanding menus, and engaging in casual dining conversations. Such practical exercises are invaluable in helping students overcome the hesitation and fear that often accompany language barriers.

The program also addresses professional language skills through mock job interviews. Here, students get a taste of the formal language and etiquette required in job settings, preparing them for future employment opportunities.

"Being part of the Adult Education program at Catholic Charities is incredibly rewarding," says Beth Nichols, manager of the program. "We are able to help our students achieve their goals, whether it is learning English to help their families or getting their high school equivalency to get a better job. The relationships our volunteers build with their students are an incredible way to witness Christ’s merciful love."

Apart from these innovative ESL classes, Catholic Charities Adult Education also offers high school equivalency classes, providing a pathway for academic advancement and better job prospects. Basic computer skills classes are another crucial component, equipping students with digital literacy in an increasingly online world.
