Interpreter - Immigration Legal Services

Position Description:  This full-time, benefited position is responsible for interpreting and translating spoken words and written texts to aide CCEOK staff and pro bono attorneys who serve eligible CCEOK clients. This position will provide interpretation services during various processes such as client screenings and attorney interviews, as well as make translations of documents from several foreign languages to English and vice versa. This position is TEMPORARY and is expected to end on September 30, 2022.

As a ministerial representative of CCEOK it is expected that both professional and social behavior be aligned with the ethical and moral standards of the Catholic Church.


  • Pray daily for the needs of the poor; opportunities include personal prayer, daily Mass, and/or adoration
  • Primarily responsible for the interpretation and translation of all spoken words and written texts related to the Afghan Placement and Assistance Program and the Pro Bono Attorney Project. Responsibilities include serving as interpreter between a wide range of people with diverse voices, accents, speaking tempos and personalities.
  • Travel within Tulsa Metropolitan Area to attend client interviews with pro bono attorneys and provide interpretation services as needed
  • Provide parties with clear and exact translations of written materials and interpretations of verbal communication
  • Impart thought, purpose, spirit, emotions and tone of speakers from source language into target language
  • Communicate in a friendly, positive manner and always engage in active listening techniques to maximize effectiveness of interpretation
  • Be willing to interpret for clients sharing graphic, personal experiences, including those involving violence and abuse
  • Interpret with no additions or omissions
  • Inform relevant parties of factors that may hinder your performance
  • Compile helpful information, including terms and definitions, into an organized glossary for regular reference during the translation process
  • Complete daily activity logs and other documentation
  • Document changes to translated materials, and maintain an orderly method for filing data for reference later on
  • Honor ethical codes to ensure sensitive and confidential information remains secure and protected
  • Comply with all other applicable ethics and standards
  • Comply with agency, departmental and accreditation guidelines
  • Work cooperatively with other agency staff, referral sources and community resources to obtain and coordinate services for clients
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Comply with policies and procedures that create a safe and secure environment, aligned with the standards of the Child and Youth Protection Charter

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent
  • Valid certificate of accredited interpreting training
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience as an interpreter


  • Must be fluent and able to translate in Dari, Pashto and English (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Outstanding listening, retention and note-taking skills
  • Proficient enunciation and pronunciation skills, and pleasant, professional voice
  • Competence in communicating and interacting with others of diverse cultural, geographic, and economic backgrounds in a professional and compassionate manner, including interacting with individuals experiencing substantial levels of emotional, physical, financial, or other hardship
  • Able to travel throughout Oklahoma and Texas to interpret for clients before EOIR and USCIS
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Strong attention to detail and good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to use basic Microsoft Office programs and online database software


  • Willingness to learn how to articulate Catholic teaching with a commitment to its application in the job function
